Airside operations at airports often resemble a bustling anthill: tight schedules, countless vehicles, and an immense amount of responsibility. Evitado, the newest member of the GATE Alliance, is not just aiming to bring order to this complexity – it’s here to drive real change.
“Our mission is to enable airside automation,” explains Julian Schmiermann, the company’s CTO. What does that mean in practice? Fewer collisions, enhanced safety, and more efficient workflows – all powered by intelligent technology.
Who is Evitado?
Founded six years ago in Hamburg by two American entrepreneurs, Evitado has grown into a global tech company with clients across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The team develops collision warning systems that support aircraft ground movements.
The idea behind it came from a simple but costly truth: “We saw how many ground incidents happen at airports – and how expensive they are. It was obvious that there had to be a better way,” Schmiermann recalls.
From Backup Beepers to Autonomous Aprons
Evitado’s solution may sound simple – but it’s anything but basic: “In essence, it’s like a backup sensor for aircraft – but smarter. Our system detects obstacles during pushback and prevents accidents before they happen.”
At the heart of this solution is ELVIZ, the world’s first plug-and-play collision warning and data intelligence system, designed to prevent ground collisions and optimize airside operations for large aircraft. Powered by cutting-edge LiDAR technology, ELVIZ scans the environment in 3D and 360 degrees with remarkable precision. With a range of over 100 meters and accuracy within 10 centimeters, it ensures aircraft and ground support equipment can be maneuvered and parked safely – even in challenging environments. Easily mounted on aircraft or ground vehicles, ELVIZ delivers real-time collision alerts through sounds, flashing lights, and an intuitive user interface.
Tackling Industry-Wide Challenges
But there’s more to Evitado’s vision than just technology. It’s about solving real, persistent problems in the aviation industry. “Ground collisions cost the aviation sector billions each year. "Many airports still rely on procedures that have remained largely unchanged for decades. That’s unsustainable – and exactly where we come in.”
Why GATE?
Joining the GATE Alliance was no coincidence. “Many key industry players are already connected here. For us, it’s the ideal platform to deepen partnerships and work together on new solutions.” Participation in working groups is particularly important to Evitado.
“There’s still a lack of standardization in airport automation. Together with GATE, we want to help define the rules – and lay the foundation for true innovation.”
